A Hero's Journey
The hero's story has been told thousands of times, with countless characters, places, and variations. Someone living an ordinary life is drawn into a larger conflict. They leave home, face dangers, discover new strengths, confront evil, and, if all goes well, find their way back. It's a tale as old as time. It can be wonderfully simple or incredibly complex, and I wanted to explore both at once.
I've always loved photographing California's forests, mountains, and coastlines, often imagining what other worlds might be hidden within these familiar places. This project brings those imagined worlds to life through an original fantasy adventure about a father and his young son.
At its heart, the story follows a familiar path. But within that journey are questions about family, loss, courage, the passage of knowledge between generations, and the choices people make when given extraordinary power.
I also wanted to bring together two very different ways of telling a story. Photography can capture an incredible amount of visual detail without a single word. Writing can create an equally detailed and complex world without showing a single image. By combining the two, I'm exploring how each can bring something to the story that the other cannot.
Using my own landscape photography, AI, and Photoshop, I introduce characters, creatures, and hidden kingdoms into real places while preserving the natural beauty of the original scenes. Light connects the artwork and the story. The same principles I use in photography—aperture, exposure, focus, and filters—become forms of magic, capable of revealing, creating, protecting, or destroying.
